What The Duck: The Story Of Ducks On Jeep Dashboards

The Jeep Wrangler is one of the most recognizable vehicles ever made. The Wrangler is so well known that people who know nothing about cars, including young children, just call them Jeeps, and in their minds, the Wrangler is basically a national institution. You may have seen little rubber ducks sitting on the dashboards of various Wrangler models driving around or sitting in parking lots. What is that about?

What’s The Story Here?

Allison Parliament purchased her dream car, a 2018 Jeep Wrangler Sahara, in May 2020. At the time, she was dividing her time between Titus, Alabama, and Washago, Ontario. At one point, she had a scary moment with someone over her Alabama license plate. She used that frustration to buy some rubber ducks that she initially intended to hide in a friend’s home as a joke. Leaving the store, she found another Wrangler like hers and decided to leave a duck with “Nice Jeep” written on it for the owner to see.

A Simple Social Media Post

What happened next was startling at first but turned into a happy moment. In an interview with The Detroit News, Allison said, "The owner was this burly, scary-looking, 6-foot-5 guy, asking, 'What are you doing? But he was smiling. He thought it was great. He said it was the best thing to come up with and the world needs more of this." The owner told Parliament that she needed to take a picture and post it on social media, and after the first day, it had over 2,000 likes, which kicked off the #duckduckjeep movement.

Allison Has Passed Away

Sadly, Allison Parliament passed away on June 22, 2024, with no cause listed. She was about 36 years old.

A Wonderful And Kind Message

A little rubber duck is obviously not a sign of aggression, and owners worldwide have used this to spread a little joy and happiness to others in the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator community. There is a Facebook group dedicated to the cause, and Ms. Parliament said that the movement had spread to 63 countries in total.

The Movement Carries On

Even though Allison has passed on, the #duckduckjeep movement is sure to continue for years to come. Already in its 4th year, there doesn’t seem to be any slowing down. In fact, during the 2022 Detroit Auto Show, Jeep displayed a 61-foot inflatable rubber duck outside their display.
