Which Pickup Would You Choose: GMC Canyon or Sierra 1500?
Oct 24, 2024 - 2 minute read
Choosing a pickup truck should be easy—but unfortunately, it isn’t. It comes down to a couple of things: Your intended use and what you are hauling and/or towing. There are other things to consider, of course, but most consumers should consider these two things—especially considering our local agricultural business here in southeastern Iowa.
GMC offers a great lineup of pickup trucks, each engineered for their intended use and offering a range of towing capacities. When it comes to lighter-duty pickup trucks, GMC offers a couple of choices made for both work and play: the 2025 GMC Sierra 1500 and the 2024 GMC Canyon.
The 2025 GMC Sierra 1500 is usually the go-to between these two pickup trucks. This half-ton, full-size pickup offers a range of options for capacity, hauling, performance, and comfort. You also have a choice of configurations and capabilities that can match your needs.
However, did you know that the 2024 GMC Canyon works as hard as its bigger sibling? Mid-size pickup trucks have grown in size, and they are starting to show some serious capability. The 2024 Canyon—able to maneuver through tight spots easily—is nimble on the job site or farm plot.
Standard power for both the 2024 Canyon and 2025 Sierra 1500 comes courtesy of the TurboMax 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, making 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque in both trucks. You will be surprised by the maximum tow figures of this engine: The Canyon’s maximum rating is 7,700 pounds, while the Sierra 1500 can tow up to 9,500 pounds. Payload ratings are also impressive with the TurboMax engine. On the Canyon, payload can reach 1,600 pounds, and for the Sierra 1500, we’re talking up to 2,240 pounds.
Unlike the Canyon, the 2025 Sierra 1500 offers more powerplants than the TurboMax engine, including a pair of V-8s (5.3-liter and 6.2-liter) and a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged Duramax diesel engine. The Duramax puts down some serious performance—305 hp and 495 pound-feet of torque—while returning good fuel economy. You can also tow more with the Duramax diesel, with a maximum tow rating of 13,200 pounds.
Both the 2024 Canyon and 2025 Sierra 1500 are designed to keep you safe wherever you go, with driver assistance and passive safety features protecting you from anything on and off the road. The 2025 Sierra 1500 adds Super Cruise to ease the pressure of driving on the roads of Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri.
When choosing the right GMC pickup truck, start by taking a look at the numbers. Match them to your needs, whether it is on the farm, the worksite, or simply around town. No matter which you choose, the 2024 Canyon and 2025 Sierra 1500 are well-engineered and well-designed pickup trucks that are built with great quality and superb value in mind.
