Off-road red pickup truck driving on muddy dirt road surrounded by greenery.

Taking the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV to the Limit

When the trail calls, how will you answer? The answer is with the right equipment. In this case, the right pickup truck. The 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV is exactly the right truck to answer the call of the trail.

The 2024 Canyon AT4X is part of the wave of off-road ready pickup trucks that are equipped with the right ground clearance and approach, departure, and breakover angles. They are protected by skid plates and offer the technology to keep you from getting stuck or lost.

After putting a 2024 Canyon AT4X through its paces, Car and Driver said that it was full of “giggles,” confirming that the 2024 Canyon AT4X is made to conquer the trail with the right amount of equipment to do so.

What makes the AT4X so special is a set of off-road features provided by American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). AEV adds rear heavy-duty cast-integrated recovery points, larger fender flares to enable larger 35-inch tires and wider 66.3-inch front and rear track, and a bed-mounted vertical tire carrier with a full-size spare wheel and tire. Plus, AEV adds hot-stamped boron steel skid plates underneath the Canyon, and a set of stamped steel bumpers for layers of protection that keep the truck from damage.

MultiMatic DSSV shocks keep the Canyon AT4X smoothly suspended on any surface. These shocks feature three separate spool valves to control damping and three connected chambers for fluid flow. These shocks are combined with a three-inch lift for 10.7 inches of ground clearance. To give it the right grip, a set of 17-inch AEV beadlock-capable Salta alloy wheels are installed, wrapped in 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires.

Power comes from the TurboMax four-cylinder turbocharged engine. It puts down 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. This is no ordinary four-cylinder engine, as it can do more than just get through the trail. You can also tow with a Canyon AT4X—up to 7,700 pounds (when properly equipped).

Keeping things easy in the face of a challenge, the Canyon AT4X has the right equipment to make the right moves safely. There are up to 10 camera views, including one mounted below the frame, to capture every angle of a maneuver that needs all the spotting help you can get. Those views are shown on the 11.3-inch center touchscreen. The same screen also has a set of off-road pages to show you everything your AT4X is doing in real time. You can also keep tabs on your Canyon AT4X through the myGMC app.

To put your 2024 Canyon AT4X AEV to the test, there are plenty of off-road vehicle trails and parks across eastern Iowa and into western Illinois and northeastern Missouri. Some of these trails are either on public land or privately operated. While you have the equipment to tackle tougher terrain, we always ask you to respect these properties and “Tread Lightly.”

When you do, we bet you’ll be giggling, too!
