Inside EVs Loves The Pacifica PHEV
When it comes to minivans, the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid is, without a doubt, one of the best on the market. Between its excellent range, grand amounts of interior volume, and styling design, everyone loves the Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid. Recently, InsideEVs took the 2024 model for a spin for a week to see if it still has the same charm it always has. Spoiler alert: it does.
Engine And Charge Time
The 2024 Pacifica plug-in hybrid is powered by the Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 with 260 horsepower and two electric motors producing 84 horsepower and 114 horsepower. With 520 miles of range, the Pacific hybrid is fast becoming the segment’s favorite minivan. In pure electric mode, the vehicle can go 32 miles before the gas motor kicks in. On a Level 2 charger, the Pacifica PHEV will take around 2 hours to fully charge.
It’s A Real Hybrid In Every Way
“Don't let that generic, overly simplistic “hybrid” moniker fool you–The Pacifica Hybrid is more sophisticated than a mild hybrid, where what is essentially a big alternator can spin the gas engine a little quicker, thus saving a bit of gas. No, the Pacifica Hybrid is an honest-to-goodness power-split-style, parallel hybrid, not dissimilar to what you'd find in a Toyota Prius or Sienna hybrid, but with a bigger battery. It has a relatively large electric motor and a big battery that allows it to drive up to 32 miles on the EPA cycle without ever turning the engine on, something the Sienna can’t do. While companies like GM and Ford waffle on whether or not they’ll introduce a PHEV family hauler, Chrysler’s quietly had one sale for the better part of a decade now.”
Two Motors For Different Purposes
Thanks to the different electric motors, the Pacifica is able to use one battery mainly for charging duties and another for driving. Once the main battery has been exhausted, it acts like a typical hybrid. InsideEVs explains, “The larger electric motor—which produces a maximum of 114 hp—is responsible for the Pacifica's fully electric motivation. The smaller electric motor is used for recharging the battery, but it has a one-way clutch allowing it to assist with power delivery if needed. When the gas engine is not running, the large electric motor is fed by a 12.2-kWh (usable) battery, good for 32 miles of range. When the full electric range is depleted, the Pacifica PHEV will function like a normal hybrid vehicle, recuperating energy when it brakes or coasts.”
A True Family Hauler
The Pacifica is genuinely a perfect family vehicle. For mothers and fathers who need to keep an eye on their children in the backseat, the Pacifica features a FamCam interior camera that gives a view of children in rear-facing child seats. Behind the third row of seats, you will find 32.3 cu.ft. of cargo space. Folding the third row opens that up to 87.5 cu.ft., and folding the second row of seats gives owners 140.5 cu.ft. of cargo capacity.
Safer Than Safe
The 2024 Chrysler Pacifica was awarded the coveted Top Safety Pick designation by The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). This means that the Pacifica is not only one of the best offerings for families, according to U.S. News & World Report, but is verified as one of the safest family vehicles on the market by the IIHS.
